Why Bother Removing a Stump?

Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal

These get used interchangeably, but they're different jobs:

• Stump grinding (what we do, and what almost every homeowner wants) uses a carbide-toothed grinding wheel to chew the stump into mulch, typically 6–12 inches below grade. The main root mass stays in the ground and decomposes naturally over a few years. Fast, affordable, minimal disturbance to the yard.
• Full stump removal means excavating the entire root ball with heavy equipment. It leaves a crater, tears up the surrounding lawn, and costs several times more. What Does Stump Grinding Cost in Little Rock?

Measure across the widest point of the stump at ground level, including the flared roots — that's the number that drives the price. Have several stumps? The biggest cost of stump grinding is getting the machine to your property, so additional stumps in the same visit are steeply discounted. How Stump Grinding Works

1. Quote. Usually we can price a stump from a photo and a tape-measure number over the phone — no site visit needed.

3. Grinding. The machine works across the stump in passes, grinding it 6–12 inches below grade — deeper on request if you're replanting. Surface roots that trip your mower can be chased and ground too.
4. Cleanup. Grinding produces a surprising mound of wood-chip mulch. We can rake it into the hole and leave it neatly crowned (it settles as it decomposes), or haul it off and leave the hole ready for topsoil and sod — your choice, priced accordingly.

Can You Plant Over a Ground Stump?

Grass, yes — once the chips are removed or settled, add topsoil and sod or seed, and within a season you won't know a tree was there. A new tree in the exact same spot is harder: the soil is full of decomposing wood that ties up nitrogen, and the old root mass is in the way. Best practice is to plant the replacement a few feet to the side, or have us grind extra deep and backfill with clean soil. Ask when we quote it — if you tell us the goal, we'll grind to match it.
